Our story

SLATE is a uniques fusion of high fashion hair styling and precision-cutting. It was created to make education accessible to all – a platform to nurture the finest talents in our industry and students from around the globe, to come together and develop their skills.

SLATE was founded by Gregory Charalambides and Michael Pitsillides. Both Michael and Gregory worked at Vidal Sassoon.

Gregory Charalambides

Gregory trained Sassoon staff to be Stylists at the Sloane Street salon whereas Michael worked at the Bond Street Salon and taught at the London Sassoon Academy.

Gregory opened his first salon in 1987 in London’s prestigious Covent Garden – it was an immediate success. Minimalist, ahead of its time, inundated with requests for national press. His clients included leading names from the world of business Simon Jordan, entertainment Nick Moran music Joe Jackson and design Michael Wolff.

In 2003 Gregory set up a private, by-appointment-only studio in London’s Soho district for his esteemed clientele, a first of its kind.

The demand for him to teach others the craft of precision-cutting was overwhelming. Gregory mentored Michael, guiding him in Sassoon to become an educator:

“The day I met Michael I had a vision to set up SLATE. Michael’s passion reminds me of my first days cutting for Vidal Sassoon.”

Michael Pitsillides

Michael’s career started by working in London’s best salon, known for its high fashion and famous clientele. There he assisted the most famous hairdressers in fashion:

“I was fortunate, the first shoot I assisted on was for Vogue”

Michael went on to work in the world of high fashion. Doing photoshoot editorials for magazines and ad campaigns he styled and cut the hair of famous models such as Flo Dron. Other work included working on runway shows for designers such as Burberry, Topshop and Margaret Howell.

Michael’s passion for styling hair was only met by his love of precision-cutting.

Michael now has experience only few hairdressers in the world can claim, a background in high fashion, top level precision cutting and … teaching.

These skills are visible in the directional style of SLATE and the courses they contribute to education.
